Respect, a simple word often used by those on the margins of society—is what keeps them alive and connected to their community.
However, they often must assert their respect through force or unconventional means.
This is what I portray in my work: a teenager who doesn't know the whereabouts of his natural parents. Raised by his uncles and adopted by the drug trade, he is yet another victim of an unequal society, an invisible figure to many. Yet, he is a human being striving for respect and acceptance from others—a soldier from the favela who risks his life in the pursuit of a better future.
